 The town of Samokov is situated in the northern foot of Rila Mountain in the field of the same name, which is the highest in Bulgaria. The longest Bulgarian River Iskar, springing from Rila, flows through it. It is situated 50 km of Sofia – the capital of Bulgaria and 8 km of Borovets – the most famous winter ski resort at the Balkan peninsula. There are 6 more resorts in the region, 2 of them being of international significance. The town is rich of cultural and historical monuments. As a resort, Samokov is attractive with its favourable climatic conditions, the beautiful coniferous forests around, the River Iskar – excellent for fishing and picnic and mostly with its closeness to Borovets and Malyovitsa, the Seven of Rila lakes, Musala – the highest top of Rila at the Balkan peninsula. In summer there are still plenty of things to do here. The biggest lake Iskar is not far away and is known as the top Sofia resort. You can access a wide range of watersports and activities here,fishing, swimming and resting at the beach along with restaurants- basically just about everything you can expect from any seaside resort. During the winter , Borovets is just 15 minutes from Samokov and is the best winter ski resort. Situated at 1300m altitude, on Rila Mountain`s northern slopes, at the very foot of Mussala peak, Borovets is the largest mountain resort in Bulgaria. The resort offers ideal opportunities for a memorable winter vacation. There are 58 kilometers of marked ski runs. าhe lift facilities are renovated every year. The resort offers excellent conditions for skiing, snowboarding, cross country or just winter holidays surrounded by the majestic pine-tree forest.
